Christmas decorations inside and out:
Children's Christmas trees

A child’s tree, in my view, is not meant to be symmetrical or perfect, but should feed the imagination. Create stories all over the tree with characters grouped together. Letting children pick their tree and ornaments and decorate it is part of the fun. Keep the tree short so that it’s accessible. Avoid breakable ornaments, plastic and glitter and stick to soft and sweet decorations - or wood and tin with character.

Instead of a cut tree, be environmentally friendly and have a potted one. It can then be planted after Christmas (or re-potted in a larger pot outdoors) ready for next Christmas. The potted 5ft Nordman which I am decorating was donated by Clifton Nurseries (www.clifton.co.uk , 020 7289 6851) which also offers a tree decorating service.

The tree is being given to a children’s hospice, Chestnut Tree House Hospice (www.chestnut-tree-house.org.uk ; 0845 450 5820). And, thanks to the generosity of John Lewis, The General Trading Company, The White Company, Ethical Superstore, Daylesford Organic, Laura Ashley and Body Shop, we have enough decorations for a second potted tree which Christmas Tree Farm (www.christmastreefarm.co.uk , 01494 794031) is donating to Richard House in London (www.richardhouse.org.uk 020 7511 0222). The children at both hospices will decorate their trees. Hospices rely on public donations - see www.lightupalife.org . Special thanks to Quicksilver Messenger Service (www.quicksilverms.co.uk , 0870 405 4445) for transporting both trees to the hospices without charge.
